Backlinking With Do Follow and Comment Luv

This summer I decided to change things up a bit with The Get Smart Blog, I wanted a new look and better features. So I changed the template to a magazine style and moved the blog from Blogger to WordPress. Moving your blog isn’t that difficult to do, especially when you are moving the blog from Blogger to WordPress but it is time consuming.

WordPress has a nifty little import blog posts from Blogger feature, once the posts have been transferred you may, depending on your template, have to go through and tweak each post. This can be a tedious time drain if you have a lot of posts. Overall though it is not as awful an endeavor as I thought it would be, more of a pain than anything else.

The truly daunting part in moving a blog is that you may have to rebuild your backlinks, page ranking, Technorati, and Alexa rating. It isn’t really that hard it just requires time. You can also do a 301 redirect but there is some talk about Google not  liking redirects, so you need to get going on all of the other stuff as well.

Lately this is all I talk about with my blog and social buddies. The other day I was talking to the creator of Regretful Morning, Jason, and he was helping me strategize on building those great backlinks again. Jason told me I needed to get out there and comment more on those “power” blogs that are in the same category as mine, which would be tech, blogging, social media, even business. I already read those blogs regularly but I do not comment much. Well I didn’t comment much, now I have an opinion and it will be heard.

This conversation got me thinking and like the nerd I am I started looking into what the SEO and blog pros think of backlinking through commenting. I found a great article over at Untwisted Vortex, I have never visited this blog before but there is some good stuff there so I will be checking it out again soon.

In the post the author discusses Do Follow and Comment Luv, he made some great points about both:

1. Most people aware of having their comments followed still only enter their name and main website address in the comment header. These particular backlinks are practically worthless for link-building and keyword/phrase authority. What we should be doing is using keywords or key phrases instead of our names and using specific page URLs. Then add a signature so the blog owner knows who you are.

2. Comment Luv is great when it works and doesn’t require any work on your part but can be bad if your post title isn’t related to the page you are commenting on.

3.The best blogs to build your backlinks are those that are DoFollow blogs and use the CommentLuv WordPress Plugin. You can get two excellent backlinks at the same time.

There is one other addition that can be made, though it is probably going a bit overboard. There is a new plugin called the Rss Atom Avatar which allows you to set up an image as an avatar for RSS and a favicon for ATOM feeds of your posts.

So you could get links from Do Follow, Comment Luv, and the RSS Atom Avatar, three links, one comment…..Crazy.

So now I ask some important questions:

1. Have you tried the backlink strategy for the Do Follow blogs that Untwisted Vortex suggests?

2. Do you change your commenting habits on blogs that have the Do Follow and Comment Luv, for example do you comment more or leave better comments?

3. Would you have a problem with someone using the Do Follow backlinking technique on your blog?

I know for myself I do not change my commenting habits based on the backlink potential but I do get a little more excited when I see comment luv on a blog. So I have added it to this blog. I have the Do Follow feature as well and I am looking at this RSS Atom Avatar plugin.

I enjoy people commenting on my blog because I think varied opinions add to the post, but if I can also help my fellow bloggers out by giving them a good backlink I think that is good too.

We have also included Keyword Luv on this blog for information on using Comment Luv and Keyword Luv check out our newest blog post.

So tell me what you think, the nerd in me needs the information….

  • Great post Bridget. I have tried posting on do follow blogs before and apparently I was not doing it right. Posting with keywords and with a noticeable image makes much more sense and are great ideas.

All this is new to me since I really don't do shit with a blog, but great info if I decide to put some effort into the one I have.

Is what I'm doing right now, comment luv?

    I'm confused....
  • I'm almost as bad at building back links as I am at updating regularly. This is good though. I am going to read into comment luv and see what I can do better. I don't know where I should even be starting as far as keywords and link relevancy is concerned. I totally agree that helping out fellow bloggers is great though. I'm going to put you on my blogroll.

  • First, I really like the design of your blog (brown is the new black). Nice theme too! I also have a great interest in SEO related topics and your post caught my attention. I'll definitely be checking out the Untwisted Vortex article right after this comment. The one important thing you mentioned is adding comments that are related to your own website/blog an interests. Great post! I've bookmarked your site and hopefully you can add a follow-up to this post. Dugg
  • hi, I think your commentluv is not working because it cannot find the included javascript files.

the best thing to do is deactivate commentluv, delete the folder and then install again direct from the repository at wordpress.org

dont forget to visit the settings page after you install.
  • Great post Bridget. I've got to get better at seeking out backlinks.
  • Bridget Ayers
Tim - Thank you I am glad this is useful and dude you can totally do that here, you have tons of posts that would work with mine. Your digg stuff, financial crisis post. Don't be shy ;)

KST - You are a funny guy, thanks for the luv!

Aaron - Again I am glad I could help, I will check out your blog, and thank you for listing me in your roll

CWA, Thank you, thank you, and thank you. I will definitely be following up on this post, I need to let you guys know how these strategies work out for me.

Andy - I love that you answered my forum problem in a comment on this post...thank you! I hate that I have to delete and re-do but I guess it is worth it.

Dave - Thank you and don't we all??

Everyone - As you can see by Andy's comment my comment luv plugin is bugging out I will have it up and running by the next post I promise!!

I have no idea of the ins and outs of the geek world. I just read blogs I like, and leave relevant comments when I can. I don't know if that helps much, it seems to work well. My PR is ok.
  • Excellent read, I am in the same process as you right now, trying to get good backlinks going. I've been submitting to directories like mad and commenting on Do Follow blogs as much as possible. There is even a directory for them at www.dofollowblogs.com.

I'll check out Comment Luv too, thanks.
  • Great post Bridget. I added commentluv to my blog last last week and dofollow several months ago. It seems that many blogs frown on the signature line and will delete links, especially if it's not relevant to the post.
  • Bridget Ayers
Joe - You have a great blog with a very loyal following so I am not surprised that your blog does well.

TWF - Thank you and I will check out the link. The one thing I will say is that I make sure first and foremost I comment on blogs I like, the comment luv and do follow come second for me. I enjoy the support that having blog buddies can bring.

John - I saw that you added comment luv, I think you have Sez Who as well don't you? I am curious what you think of Sez Who? Thank you for the heads up on the signature line pet peeve for some bloggers.
  • "I think you have Sez Who as well don’t you?" - Funny you should ask. Yes, I technically have Sez Who, however, I have the plugin disabled right now. It seems to really slow down the page loading. I read an article on how to "fix" the plugin to help speed things up, unfortunately, I didn't bookmark it...:( So, for now, no Sez Who.....I hope to enable it soon, as I really like the idea.
  • I love these realtively short posts that basically cover one topic. Starting a blog is easy. Starting a good blog is harder. Maintaining a blog is harder still. And sometime in all this you have to figure out all these backlink nofollow things as well.

John - I do have SezWho but like you I have it disabled at the moment, I am still working on getting Comment Luv to work properly. I also found a post about speeding up the SezWho here: http://turnipofpower.com/2008/07/19/sezwho-got-... (There's a backlink for you Turnip of Power)

Dan - I am glad you liked the post and I couldn't agree more with your comment!!
  • Hey thanks Bridget, that's the article I had read!
  • Hi thanks, love the comment lov - I digged this!
  • Yup i do dofollow and comentluv at my blogs
  • I've been having some problems with the "redirect" on my blog ... or at least some people have said that's the problem. I'm gonna have to get around to fixing it. Thanks all around for this post. I love comment luv :)
  • No comment love here..since there's still an external nofollow tag..is this post just bullshit ?
  • Bridget Ayers
    John b- Glad I could help! :D

Revenue-Also good to know, I hope to love the comment luv plugin as much as the rest of you soon.

Sg Entrepreneur - I know all about technical difficulties (hence no comment luv yet) they can be so frustrating! I am glad you enjoyed the post.

Edwin - Wow that is aggressive for a Monday afternoon...love the passion though and you have a pretty snazzy site there. This post is not bullshit I promise! We are working with Andy over there at comment luv and I hope to have our "technical difficulties" resolved soon.

  • Since I use CommentLuv I would like to give you my input on your questions.

    1. I do not use the strategy of Untwisted Vortex mainly because I have seen several blogs that very specifically state that if you use keywords in the name your comment will not be posted.

    2. I do not change my commenting habits based on CommentLuv but I might based on what they say. I may have to think about commenting on blogs that are not directly related.

    3. I won't have a problem with someone using those techniques.

One thing I do is use the Lucia Linky Luv plugin to control the do follow. You can set the number of posts that and individual has to make before do follow is used. Seems to work well.

  • I think CommentLuv is pretty cool and I like that it leaves info about your last post; however, sometimes it does not pick up my last post. It picks up an older post. I've made several posts since my Don Pablos post.

  • Welcome to the world of Wordpress - isn't is so much better than Blogger? I love your design - especially your header. I have Comment Luv installed on my site - I like to see what my commenters have written on their site so that i can stop by and visit them. I'm not a fan of people leaving a keyword instead of their name or online alias in the comment name field. In fact if I see a keyword when moderating comments I look more closely to see if its spam. It's difficult - because we all want to build back links but then its not right to spam a blog just because it has do follow set up.

I just installed Comment Luv myself today to see if it makes any difference. As a follow up, I did a search on "comment luv do follow" and this site was at number 1 in Google. It seems like Comment Luv is really catching on.

Mike - I am glad we could help you find a new tool. And that is great news about the Google page rank. Thanks.

  • I hope the commentluv and dofollow plugins are working for you. It's now around four months since you implemented them - would you say it's been a worthwhile exercise in terms of visitor numbers and revenue ?
  • Problem is that when you don't use a blogging engine for your website comment luv goes crazy with your rss feed (won't find it grmpf). So I most like Keyword Luv :-). What about a combination of Keyword Luv and Comment Luv gives even more BL lol :-D!
  • Thanks for the post. Hope to see more articles regarding this one. It will really be a big help.
    Thank you
  • I absolutely love that plugin. It's definitely one one of my favorites and adding it to your blog will draw more comments, traffic, and raise your rank.
  • I'm trying to get CL set up on my wp 2.7 blog but having some conflicts with the theme I believe. Meanwhile, backlinking to by static blog. Soon, I'm converting my last website to a WP blog. Any reason I can't use the Pages for my static content? I think that works.

  • Thank goodness for the LUV. Aren’t we all fed up with spammers. You know the ones that leave filthy comments on our blogs about things we will never buy. It is a travesty that not only email gets spammed but now our blogs. At least now with LUV we have some sort of filter.
  • I love the key word love plugin . Helps a lot to attract lot of comments and show your blog active and attracts traffic too !
  • Love spreading the love! Like you mentioned in your article, I think that it is important for people to link to pages within their blog to laser focus on keywords. I didn't here but, in this case, I want to point to my homepage with this keyword. But, I have a question: you mentioned that your blog does "do-follow" except the majority of the links above have "no-follow" on them. Do you have a preset amount of comments before someone gets the love?

    Anyway, great post.

    Thanks, T

PS: There is no "Notify Me of Follow-Up" below. You could add this so we will know when there are updates to our comments.

    Cheers!
  • Nice post, I have been using dofollow blogs for increasing my search engine ranking, a few weeks ago I released the tool I had been using. Its really good for helping to find dofollow blogs (about 10k a minute) and leaving comments.

It lets you set your name, email and website so all you need to do is read the post and leave a genuine comment and you will more likely than not get a good backlink.

You can get the same tool by clicking on my name ^^. I have about 950 downloads on this tool so far, I'm pretty chuffed with that :)

I am sure the true spammers wont but for others if they like what they read a bookmark is quite likely and repeat visits a possibility so in terms of growth i think the benefits outweigh the negatives.
  • Wow, this is a great plug-in. I will have to put it on my blogs and see how it works. Thanks for the content!

  • Having a do-follow blog and a keywordLuv plugin for your blog is really nice, plus a commentLuv? There is no better deal than having these three elements present in your blog because it has many benefits. First, it attracts readers to your blog. Second, you get quality comments. Lastly, your readers will gain quality back links.
  • Thanks for the luv. This is such a crucial part in the link building strategy. I really love to see bloggers that offer this plugin. Much luv!

  • I'm new to blogging and I've been trying to read up as much as I can about blogging. I have only just come across the do follow idea. The only thing I would say is that from what I understand the whole point of backlinking is to raise your webpage higher in the search engines, but I do not understand how you would achieve this unless you had a very specific SEO strategy and particular keywords that you were trying to be found by searching.
  • That plug in can help bring a lot of traffic to your blog. Plus there are quite a few directories and lists of sites using this plug in so you may also get some links too. Thanks alot for the help man i'm really quite lousy at this so you made a difference!
  • Hi Bridget,

I think comment luv and keyword luv are great. Not only for link buolding but also for rewarding people who comment on your blog and therefore increasing interactivity between you and your readers.

Have you been out commenting more since this post?

    Really great looking site btw!!
  • I have been posting in do follow blogs from so many days but they didn't work for me as I wanted them to. But now I got an idea on how to do that with the help of your post. Thanks!
  • I know that I am more inclined to comment with commentluv, but it's not for the link. I hate to comment when I suspect the blog owner will just send it to the spam folder.

  • Generally I like the Keyword Luv and Comment Luv plug-ins because I find most people appreciate the back links and are willing to leave a quality comment in order to get one. There are always the exceptions, but for most people I think these are some pretty excellent add ons.
  • i've been using commentluv for a while and its awesome but only just come across keyword luv (thanks to you!) and its awesome - means both parties win. The blog owner gets a real name and the commenter gets some keywords. Great post thanks, i'm off to download keyword luv!

  • Could you plz post a detailed tutorial on how you transferred your blogger blog to a wordpress one?
  • Do follow and comment luv are win win scenarios for the blogger and poster. I know their are drawbacks due to spam but hopefully the benefits outweigh the drawbacks.
  • How does comment luv work, is it still active here? I cant find anything about it in this comment box?
  • Keywordluv does not seem to be an active plugin anymore and I had to pull commentluv off to get Disqus on but they are working on the integration of the two so that should hopefully be happening soon. I will update as soon as I know more. This is still a dofollow blog - after you have visited and commented a few time - so you should still have the benefit of that feature while we wait for commentluv.

    Thx!
  • This is great for seo. I'm going to try it on all my website to see if it adds any page rank. Thanks for sharing!
  • Keyword Luv is a great alternative to comment luv for people who do not have a blog on their site! If you do have a blog on your site, both work great together!
  • I just checked and I believe that Keywordluv has been pulled from Wordpress plugins - that is really too bad. :(
  • Indeed, the keyword luv plug in do entice commenters into writing more relevant comments on do follow blogs if onlly because they are assured of high quality link because of this plug in.
  • Its strange that you are writing on Do Follow and Comment Luv but yourself using No-Follow attribute which gives no advantage to commentators. why is that?
  • Hi Kate, thank you for posting a comment - about a week ago I posted in the comments that the keyword luv plugin has been scrapped and that that I changed over to Disqus for my comments. Disqus is working on an integration w/ comment luv. This is a dofollow blog, but it follows after a certain number of comments.

Thanks again for dropping by, I really appreciate it!
  • Thanks Briget for the reply. I got my answer. Please, can you be more specific about after how many comments? Thanks
  • This is a great tool for bloggers…all thou it gets difficult to find such blogs that have keywordluv or commentluv enabled. Great way to generate backlinks!

  • Great post. Makes us realise the importance of having quality links, relevant anchor texts and comments that makes sense and add value to a blog. If everyone could put some effort we would all be winners in a way. Share the keyword luv.
  • charlotterealestate
Thank you for the great info!
  • hi,
IF we will talk about the back links then do follow blogs are playing very important role to do this task. you have provided very nice information about the do follow blogs.
    Thanks for sharing the information.
  • I love Comment Luv and Do Follow. But to answer one of your questions about if I alter the way I comment based on if I get a backlink, I'd have to honestly answer yes. Not that the comment is any more thought provoking, but I think I tend to just keep a lot of comments to myself if it's a lot of trouble to post a comment or when it just seems fruitless.
  • I suppose Google will just change their algorithm if they have to, but for now, “do follow blogs” are on the rise.
