Shift Happens Are You Ready?

October 31, 2008 by Bridget Ayers

In life it is easy to get caught up in the little details while missing the bigger picture. The world is changing quickly, that is obvious, but what isn’t so obvious is how incredibly enormous the change is.

The video is titled… Did You Know and is a shorter version of the the Did You Know? presentation on Youtube which is a year old and has been viewed 2.4 million times

Did you know

Shift Happens Wiki

Karl Fisch, The Fischbowl
Scott McLeod, Dangerously Irrelevant,

Here are a few of the statistics from the video:

~In 10 years China will be the #1 English speaking country

~Top 10 in-demand jobs in 2010 did not exist in 2004

~1 out of 8 married couples in the U.S. last year met online

~200 million registered users on MySpace
If MySpace were a country it would be the 5th largest in the world

~The #1 ranked country in Broadband Internet Penetration is Bermuda
#19 U.S.
#22 Japan

~31 Billion searches on Google every month
In 2006, this number was 2.7 Billion

~1992 first text commercial
Today the number of text messages sent and received everyday, exceeds the total population of the planet.

~Years it took to reach a market audience of 50 million

  • Radio 38 years
  • TV 13 years
  • Internet 4 years
  • Ipod 3 years
  • Facebook 2 years

~The Number of Internet Devices

  • 1984 1000
  • 1992 1,000,000
  • 2008 1,000,000,000

So What Does All of This Mean??

For business owners the answer is simple…..if you are not part of the shift you will be left behind.

  • I cannot see how the claim that the internet reached 50M people in four years can possibly be true by any reasonable definitions. The internet protocol IPv4 was defined in 1981 but there were not 50M on-line users for at least another 15 years.

  • @ Jon

I suppose that they started to consider the start of the Internet somewhere in the 90's, when it started to be more known and used.

I think what really comes out strongly as a message from this is that more information is created than ever and that it's spread around the world at the fastest rate ever seen in human history. Also, it's just gonna continue to evolve in that way for as far as we can predict.

  • That really gives you something to think about. I wonder what will be added to the list in 2010. Maybe I'll have an Ipod & Facebook account by then.

  • I remember running my father's Gestetner printing machine to help him with class handouts...going to the "ditto" room at school (and smelling the copies)...thinking NCR forms were the way to go...and being able to change the font ball in an IBM Selectric...thank goodness for technology.

  • Great video. Another video which is a must watch is 'The Story of Stuff'.

And finally, the documentary series 'The Century of Self' is another must watch. A real eye opener to the way the world really operates.

  • The world is changing alright!
As a Gen X guy, I was brought up by a baby boomer couple, loving parents, who gave me (with no fault of their own) no tools to deal with change!
I went to school, studied hard, got good grades, went to university, and did my degree in business, (graduated in '97), with absolutely irrelevant knowledge.
Everything I do today, has nothing to do with my formal education. all self taught.
Gen Y'ers have a total different perspective of the world: nothing is local anymore. Every business is potentially global, as they have FB "friends" from around the globe!
Interesting times ahead. strap yourself, and hold tight. it's going to get bumpy!
  • Wow.. the post is great.. It show us in a few words the world´s changing.. Its very soon.. Facebook is the most fast thing they created..
  • I am suprised that japan has less dsl users than the USA. Not suprised how the US has lower amount but bermuda has highest that shocked me.
