Check Out The Competition

Three websites that will help you check out your competition, gauge your own efforts, and give you information to improve your website’s performance. You can use these sites to compare your website against the competition or to research the top websites in your industry/category.

These sites are also useful for obtaining data on your targeted demographic, successful marketing efforts, and popular trends and topics. You shouldn’t have to struggle trying to figure out the best way to get your website out to the masses, learn from those that have already worked out the winning formula.

There are three principal means of acquiring knowledge….observation, reflection, and experimentation. Observation collects facts; reflection combines them; experimentation verifies the result of that combination. ~ Denis Diderot

Compete.com

Compete is a web analytics company that has a sample of 2,000,000+ U.S. Internet users that have given them permission to analyze the web pages they visit and ask them questions via surveys. The insights they create from consumers’ online behavior – whether they’re watching, searching, shopping or socializing – is valuable for companies who are looking to radically improve their marketing. We think that web analytics means analyzing what consumers do across the entire web, not just what they do within a particular site, and that marketers can use this rich information across the entire company, not just for online media planning or site design decisions.

With Daily Reach, see the number of people that visit a website on a given day as a percentage of all U.S. Internet users that day. As a part of Compete Pro, Reach is a daily metric that provides information about the impact of planned or unplanned events, such as new advertising campaigns, product/service launches or general site growth.

With Compete.com, you can identify rival search marketing strategies to take your SEM and SEO efforts to the next level, and stay on top of rivals with site metrics and audience profiles.

Quantcast

Quantcast provides publishers, marketers and agencies unmatched capabilities to measure, organize, discover and transact based on directly-measured traffic and inferred audience data.

Quantified Publisher program provides free direct-measurement of audiences for sites, blogs, videos, games, widgets and all forms of distributed content. Quantcast Media Planner provides web properties based on audience filters – with a free and easy-to-use service that facilitates evaluation of millions of web properties against specific target audience criteria (demographics, geography, and affinities).

Quantcast is based on inference modeling which combines directly-measured traffic data from Quantified Publishers with a variety of sample-based audience reference points (several varieties, in addition to publisher supplied information). The data volumes powering Quantcast’s services are dramatically larger than traditional panel-based audience approaches – with over 130 billion new media consumption events being logged and processed monthly.

Google Trends

Google Trends analyzes a portion of Google web searches to compute how many searches have been done for the terms you enter, relative to the total number of searches done on Google over time. We then show you a graph with the results – our Search Volume Index graph.

Located beneath the Search Volume Index graph is our News reference volume graph. This graph shows you the number of times your topic appeared in Google News stories. When Google Trends detects a spike in the volume of news stories for a particular search term, it labels the graph and displays the headline of an automatically selected Google News story written near the time of that spike. Currently, only English-language headlines are displayed, but we hope to support non-English headlines in the future.

Below the search and news volume graphs, Trends displays the top regions, cities, and languages in which people searched for the first search term you entered.

  • Some interesting websites there - it goes to show that you need to plan a strategy with your site rather than blindly head off in a direction and then realise your mistake after you've wasted time and effort on doing the wrong thing. Google trends makes for interesting reading.
